Seaside apartment: total renovation on the fifth floor

Every interior design project is based on a unique collaboration. Sometimes a project goes ahead in close consultation with the builder himself. For the interior design of this seaside flat, the main contractor was our guide. A throwback to a challenging interior renovation, on the fifth floor of an apartment building in Knokke.

Shared design

When designing the new interior, the interior designer based himself on the plans of the main contractor, who was not that much involved in the remaining debates.

The existing interior would be completely redesigned, and the former room layout needed to turn into a more practical one with a clear aesthetic appeal throughout the apartment. In the final stage of the project, the outdoor terrace would also be renovated entirely.

After creating the 3D design, project manager Erwin started the measurements with a clear focus on the technical drawings. All of this happened in close consultation with the contractor.

The kitchen as the central benchmark

Central to this interior renovation is the new kitchen, a combination of dark and bright elements. With fronts in Shinnoki Chocolate Oak, finished with a Dekton tabletop and backsplash, and surrounded by high pressure laminate in wood structure.

This wood structure is echoed throughout the apartment’s entire layout. From the kitchen, this material visually extends into the fireplace cabinet, all the way to the other side of the room, including in the staircase to the upper floor.

17 calculations for the perfect result

This apartment is truly bursting with details. From the visual elements such as the milled-out handles of the Shinoki-finished cabinets ,the built in sink in the bathroom wall or the TV cabinet that blends seamlessly into the storage room … everything has been considered.

Due to the strange pivot point of the existing front door – it turned out not to be 100% plumb – the combination with the wall finish originally proved difficult. More specifically, the door would not be able to open far enough.

In order to visually match the wall and door finishes perfectly and for the door to open smoothly, 17 different calculations were needed to make the figures work. This was the result of experience, but also of continuous strong communication with the other parties in the project, right down to the smallest details.
